NDP candidate for South Windward calls for government to improve their hurricane rebuilding efforts
Andrew John, the New Democratic Party’s candidate for South Windward has criticised the government’s slow roll out of hurricane relief in South Windward after hearing that residents have still not heard from the government on when damage to their property could be fixed.
Speaking on the issue Andrew John said “Many homes in South Windward are still damaged from the passing of Hurricane Beryl and the owners have not even had a visit from the government to tell them when they can expect repairs to be made. It is not good enough. The government was given money by Parliament in July so they’ve had more than enough time to begin repairs. People in Windward should not have to wait this long for the government to help us. Once again the ULP are neglecting the Windward side of SVG”.
Parliament voted to provide the government with funding of $136 million in June. The world bank has supplied an additional $63 million in support to aid with recovery efforts in October.
Andrew John added “People are struggling with the high cost of living at the moment, they cannot afford to pay for repairs themselves though some people have been forced to. I worry that the government’s slow action is causing people to have to spend money they do not have to repair their home or to open their business up”.
The NDP has frequently called upon the government to deploy these funds in a timely manner to restore homes and businesses as fast as possible.
